Joey King in The Princess

The Princess draws from classic fairy tale tropes, but instead of perpetuating them, it subverts them to deliver a thrilling action movie. The film may open with the iconic image of the princess sleeping in a bed in a high tower but immediately pivots into an intense and surprisingly brutal action sequence, reminding audiences that this is a much different kind of fairy tale.

Uncharted (2022)

Based on the best-selling video game franchise, Uncharted naturally garnered a lot of excitement. In the film, Tom Holland would take on the role of the famous Nathan Drake, where he is recruited by Sullivan to race mercenaries and find the legendary treasure from the Magellan expedition.

While not a beat-for-beat remake of any of the games, Uncharted still captured the bold and epic atmosphere of the games through its over-the-top action sequences but also embodied the game’s humor through its cast. With shades of classic movies like Indiana Jones, Uncharted is considered by some as one of the best recent adventure films, offering thrills for fans old and young.

The Adam Project (2022)

Adam Project Ryan Reynolds Zoe Saldana

The first science fiction movie to break into the top 10, the Adam Project reunited Ryan Reynolds and director Sean Levy in a classic time travel story in which Reynolds crash lands in the past and must team up with his 12-year-old self in order to save the future.

While the plot may not be groundbreaking, The Adam Project is a success because of its ability to not only deliver exhilarating moments of action that feature unique weapons and devices from the future but it also packs a lot of heart surrounding the concept of family, loss and how to heal from that loss.

The Lost City (2022)

The Lost City follows romance author Loretta Sage and her doltish but charming book cover model who must survive capture from an eccentric billionaire hellbent on finding a lost treasure. While the movie may be a romance film at its core, its refusal to stay within one genre and adopt several is why it became a hit with audiences.

With its stacked cast of action star veterans, which includes Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, and Brad Pitt, there are more than a few moments that will satisfy even the most passionate action genre fans. Brad Pitt shines as the grizzled ex-military operative, taking down waves of enemies while at the same time being the source of much of the comedy.

The Northman (2022)

box office the northman

The Northman, considered one of the best movies about Vikings, is an epic revenge tale that follows Amleth and his quest to seek revenge on his uncle for murdering his father and taking away his kingdom. The third feature film from acclaimed director Robert Eggers, The Northman may not have reached immense financial success, but did receive mostly praise from critics.

Alexander Skarsgard’s portrayal as Amelth perfectly captures the essence of a man at war, with both himself and those he considers enemies. Physically imposing, he is the embodiment of rage fueled by his devotion to revenge and every slice of his sword or swing of his fists is nothing short of a visceral experience.

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent (2022)

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Nicolas Cage

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, the meta-comedy starring Nicolas Cage as Nicolas Cage, is brimming with humor and an outrageous number of meta Nicolas Cage movie references. While the film primarily operates as a comedy, telling the story of Cage meeting with a mega-fan to help alleviate some financial debt, it surprises with a strong dose of classic Cage action.

The action in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is unique from other films because of the self-referential comedy that is used throughout the film. Real-life fans of Cage’s filmography will appreciate the subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, references to iconic action Cage films like Face/Off and Con Air as it adds an extra layer of humor to the ongoing action of the film.

Thor: Love & Thunder (2022)

The highest grossing movie of 2022 so far, Top Gun: Maverick has defined all expectations and has become this year’s movie phenomenon. Taking place over 30 years from the original movie, Top Gun: Maverick resumes the story of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell who is recruited to help train a new batch of pilots for a perilous mission.

Already considered one of Tom Cruise’s best films, Top Gun: Maverick is a perfect blend of homage to the original while still introducing new characters and obstacles to keep things fresh. But above all else, it utilizes upgraded movie technology to film the most exhilarating action sequences the world has ever seen.

Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)

everything everywhere all at once michelle yeoh

to say Everything Everywhere All At Once took 2022 by storm may be selling it a bit short. While the concept of the multiverse was just recently explored in Spider Man: No Way Home, there was no preparing audiences for the sheer insanity that Everything Everywhere All At Once would bring.

Everything Everywhere All At Once embraces the ridiculous and uses it to weave a touching but also outrageous story of love and acceptance. One moment audiences will find themselves sobbing and then the next, they will be watching Michelle Yeoh battle her daughter through the infinite universes, but it’s this perfect balance of heart and thrills that have made the movie a fan favorite.

The Batman (2022)

The Batman Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne in suit and cowl

Matt Reeves’ The Batman burst onto the scene in March of 2022 and for many movie fans, never left the spotlight. A much darker take on the Caped Crusader than previous iterations, The Batman chronicles the titular character’s mission to uncover the corruption in Gotham and stop the sadistic Riddler.

In this version, the action is much more rooted in reality, resulting in a more visceral reaction to the action sequences. Moviegoers won’t just witness the roar of the batmobile or every bone-breaking takedown – the seamless choreography and impeccable sound design will have them experiencing these intense moments vicariously.
