Junji Ito Maniac Reveals First Images, Casting Details From Horror Anthology Anime

The first images from the upcoming horror anthology Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre have been unveiled, along with casting details.

The first animation stills from the upcoming horror anthology anime, Junji Ito Maniac, Japanese Tales of the Macabre have been released, along with main cast details.

The images and casting information were recently unveiled on Junji Ito Maniac’s official website. Although the website is only in Japanese, translations were later provided by Crunchyroll. Netflix announced on Twitter last month during its “Geeked Week” that Junji Ito Maniac was in production and would adapt various stories from the bibliography of renowned horror mangaka Junji Ito. It is currently scheduled to debut sometime in 2023.

The anime anthology will be adapting a total of five stories. “The Strange Hikizuri Siblings: The Seance” will star Takahiro Sakurai, known for his role as Giyu Tomioka in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, as Kazuya Hikizuri. Rome Park (Attack on Titan) will star alongside Sakurai as Kiko Hizukuri. The second story, “The Long Hair in The Attic,” will star Yoko Hikasa (Berserk) as female protagonist Chiemi.

In “Unbearable Labyrinth,” Hisako Kanemoto, who is known for her role as Erina Nakiri from Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma, will star as the character Sayoko. “The Bully” will star Natsumi Takamori (Bodacious Space Pirates) as Kuriko, the villainous main protagonist. No casting details about the last story, “The Den of The Sleep Demon,” have yet been revealed. That story, which appeared in Volume 10 of the Horror World of Junji Ito collection, revolves around a man named Yuji who believes there is a living person in his dreams who is trying to break out into the real world.

Uzumaki Also Set to Spiral Into Horror

Junji Ito is a highly prolific manga artist who has frequently been recognized for his contributions to the horror genre. Ito was awarded two Eisner Awards in 2021 for the 2020 collected editions of Remina and Venus in the Blind Spot, one for Best Writer/Artist and one for Best US Edition of International Material–Asia. There is currently another anime adaptation in the works for Junji Ito’s Uzumaki, a story about a young woman named Kirei whose life devolves into chaos and terror when the residents of her hometown are besieged by an unusual spiral phenomenon that infects their bodies. The series, which is being directed by Hiroshi Nagahama (Fruit Basket 2001 Revolutionary Girl Utena) was planned to be released this October but has since been delayed.
