Fullmetal Alchemist Creator Announces New Anime Film with Gorgeous Winry Art


Fullmetal Alchemist creator Hiromu Arakawa announces a new film, seemingly drawing from the A New Beginning light novel, for release on Netflix.

A new Fullmetal Alchemist movie is on the way.

On Instagram, series creator Hiromu Arakawa revealed Fullmetal Alchemist: A New Beginning would release on Netflix on Dec. 24, 2022. She celebrated the announcement with an image of Winry Rockbell. No additional information was provided in the post. However, Fullmetal Alchemist: A New Beginning is also the title of a light novel by Makoto Inoue that originally released in 2007. As that story centers on Winry, it seems likely that the movie will adapt the light novel in some way.

Originally published in the Monthly Shōnen Gangan magazine, Fullmetal Alchemist ran from 2001 until 2010. The series follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who are attempting to find the Philospher’s Stone to undo the damage they did to their bodies in attempting to resurrect their mother. On their journey, they’re forced to contend with many dangerous foes, some of whom have supernatural abilities. The manga received critical acclaim and has sold millions of volumes worldwide, with the franchise having crossed into different media such as video games and live-action movies. In the series, Winry is a skilled mechanic and a childhood friend of the two protagonists. She and Edward later get married.


Fullmetal Alchemist was adapted into an anime that ran for 51 episodes between 2003 and 2004. That was followed up by a sequel film, Conqueror of Shamballain 2005. The original anime series was not particularly faithful to the source material, so in 2009, a new version of the story, this time titled Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, started airing. That project lasted for 64 episodes, ending in 2010, and followed the manga more closely. A tie-in movie, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milosreleased in 2011.

Outside of animation, a Japanese live-action version of Fullmetal Alchemist focusing mainly on Edward’s battle with the villianous Scar released in 2017. At the time of writing, the movie holds a 28 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite that reception, two sequels released in 2022. The first of those movies, subtitled The Revenge of Scar, is set to stream internationally via Netflix on Aug. 20.
