Chris Hemsworth’s Best Action Movies, Ranked

Now a global superstar, Chris Hemsworth has been acting since the early 2000s. He first rose to fame in his native country of Australia thanks to his television role in Home and Away. From there, Hemsworth made the leap to Hollywood, earning small roles in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot in 2009 and in Perfect Getaway. Of course, it was his role as the God of Thunder in the first Thor movie, directed by Kenneth Branagh, that catapulted Hemsworth to international fame. Playing Thor in multiple Thor and avengers movies has solidified Hemsworth as a leading actor and action star.

Indeed, over the course of the last decade, Hemsworth’s career has mostly stayed within the action genre. His latest action movie Thor: Love and Thunder just released this summer, and he is currently at work on the Mad Max prequel furiosastarring Anya Taylor-Joy, which, per The Wrap, is set to release in 2024. From Red Dawn to Extractionhere are Chris Hemsworth’s best action movies, ranked.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

7 Red Dawn (2012)

Red Dawn is an action war movie that focuses on young people who decide to defend their country from North Korean occupation. Initially, the occupants were supposed to be Chinese, but the producers wanted the movie to market well in China, so they changed it up a bit. It didn’t really help since it still didn’t reach Chinese audiences and the movie didn’t really receive the best of reviews due to it being a remake that failed to live up to the original. That said, it certainly wasn’t because of Hemsworth’s performance as Jed Eckert. Hemsworth’s speeches as the group leader in this movie are top-notch.

6 The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016)

The Huntsman: Winter’s War serves both as the prequel and a sequel to its predecessor Snow White and the Huntsman. It tells the story about the feud between two sisters, Queens Ravenna and Freya, and the beginnings of the huntsmen as a result of the feud. It stars an ensemble cast of names such as Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, and Sam Claflin. The stacked cast was especially praised by the critics, although they deemed the movie unnecessary. However, it has all the desirable elements that an action fantasy movie should have: childhood lovers torn apart by war, one of them becoming a weapon to fight wars, and a cold assassin that eventually shows his emotions.

5 Men in Black: International (2019)

given how Men in Black: International was the first installment in the series that doesn’t star Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in the lead roles, there was an immense pressure to follow-up with something worth checking out. Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson had already proved to have a great chemistry on set with Thor: Ragnarok, so the choice to cast them as the main co-workers did not disappoint. In this fourth installment, the Men in Black have to deal with a mole in the agency. We can be glad that someone watched Ragnarok and decided to give us more of the buddy cop-esque comedy action sci-fi movies with those two, and they were right! It’s true that it could have used more substance in the plot, but it nevertheless serves as comfort food for the brain.

4 Black Hat (2015)

black hat is an action thriller movie starring Hemsworth, Tang Wei, and Viola Davis. After a Chinese nuclear plant gets hacked and experiences a meltdown, they need someone to find the hacker who caused harm from the outside. The FBI contacts convicted hacker Hathaway (Hemsworth) who gets a temporary leave from prison in order to locate the hacker and bring them in. The general audience is divided in their opinions on the movie. Overall, the pluses that we would personally highlight are the digital night photography, the dramatic lightning, and especially the wordless performances of action in particular. The first two-thirds of the movie may appear lackluster, but the last third will definitely make up for it.

3 12 Strong (2018)

12 strong is an action war movie based on the non-fiction book Horse Soldiers, which tells the story of soldiers who were deployed to Afghanistan right after the 9/11 attack. With Hemsworth, Michael Shannon, and Michael Peña in the lead roles, critics praised the cast in particular for delivering the action sequences in an entertaining way. It’s a common war movie, but it might become your favorite one. Of course, it’s important to point out that while it showcases the heartbreaking goodbyes the army had to say to their families, it also tells a very one-sided story from an American military perspective, so take it as you will.

Extraction‘s success was so immense that it became the most-watched original film in Netflix’s history, per CNET, with a reported 99 million households. This is perhaps why there’s already a sequel in development. The plot centers on an Australian mercenary, played by Hemsworth, who is on a mission to save an Indian drug lord’s son, but the mission goes haywire. The movie is action-packed, has characters that you just love, and is something along the lines of John Wick and Tasks.

1 Thor: Ragnarok

What more is there to be said about Thor: Ragnarok other than it’s hands down the best Thor installment and, might we dare say, one of the best MCU movies to this day. Taika Waititi as the director made excellent decisions about Thor’s character, deciding to strip the hammer away from him to depict him as a stand-alone superhero. The God of Thunder is forced to fight his own sister Hela to prevent the demise of Asgard called Ragnarok. The film was highly praised for its action sequences, as well as the humor that the actors delivered almost perfectly. The superhero losing his eyes, his weapon, and his signature hair provided the perfect opportunity to showcase the character in a different light.
