10 Best TV Shows About Young Professional Life, According To Reddit

Shows set in a professional setting are not rare and are seemingly popular because Succession is already filming its fourth season and Emily in Paris lasted five weeks on Netflix’s Top 10 list. Perhaps this is because the workplace is where many young people spend a big part of their lives.

It’s scary to start out, so these types of shows can offer some comfort, as well as some reassurance, to anyone beginning their career path. However, these TV series are not always all that realistic, so fans might want to take some of these entertaining shows with a grain of salt.

Younger (2015 – 2021)

Younger on Hulu” was simply said by Redditor Dry-Garden-2198. It’s a show with an interesting premise that suggests that starting a new career is easier when you’re younger. Single-mom, Liza, decides to start a new job by pretending she’s younger and seeing how far it gets her.

The story itself is not the most believable, but the mostly female cast is enchanting and talented. One thing is clear after watching this – whether 40 or 20 years old, most people don’t have a clue about what they’re doing anyway, so it shouldn’t matter.

Emily In Paris (2020 -)

Reddit user kcouto1012 suggested: “Emily in Paris! Season Two is coming out on Netflix Wednesday!” While Emily in Paris has indeed received praise for being a lighthearted show set abroad, it also received countless criticism, especially when it comes to what some viewers feel is Emily’s obnoxious attitude.

But there are so many aspects of this show that make it enjoyable if one doesn’t look too deep into the content. It’s filmed on location, so fans get to see the gorgeous streets and hidden corners of Paris. The fashion is a little ostentatious, but it’s nice to see Emily start to learn about the French joie de vivre the longer she lives there.

How To Make It In America (2010 – 2011)

Reddit user odiamemas16 said: “Try How To Make It In America, if you got HBO it Amazon Prime you can watch it there. It’s about some young guys from NY going through life, trying to make it in the fashion industry with their streetwear brand. Dope show though.”

Arguably somewhat similar to Broad City in its premise – the series surrounds characters in their 20s trying to make it in New York in the fashion industry. While arguably not as genuine or as engaging as some similar shows, this show might be just what one needs for people just starting out or even unemployed.

Industry (2020 – )

Industry on HBO Max. It’s literally about young finance professionals working on Wall Street.” said Reddit user Shotta2525. Indeed, with as many medical and legal dramas out there as there are, it may be surprising to some that there aren’t more series based in a professional finance setting.

Perhaps not relatable to everyone, this is still a fun choice for a watch as it follows young graduates who have to compete for their positions. The premise is familiar and even a little soapy, but the setting makes the show seem like it hasn’t been done a 1,000 times before.

Broad City (2014 – 2019)

Redditor TheNatRussell suggested: “Broad City highlights some funny workplaces.” The show follows two female friends in their 20s trying to make it in New York City. It was critically well-received and it has a whopping 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This will come as no shock to many after learning that Amy Poehler’s name is attached to the show as executive producer.

The TV show is created by women and manages to be funny without even trying. It follows Abbi and Ilana through multiple workplaces as they try to succeed in the complicated world of adults, making it relatable to many just starting out and struggling.

The Good Doctor (2017 – )

The Good Doctor was suggested by Reddit user -t1t0-, who simply suggested the show title. It’s also one of the few medical shows mentioned in the Reddit thread.

This series follows a group of medical professionals (some of them young) on ‚Äč‚Äčtheir career paths. As seen in nearly every other show, it involves their personal lives as well as professional struggles, but what sets this series apart is that it is based on a South Korean medical series of the same name.

Angel (1999 – 2004)

One Redditor had an unusual suggestion: “Angel! It’s a spin-off of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, about a group of young adults starting a business to help people who have problems linked to the supernatural/paranormal. It also has a firm of lawyers, and a few are pretty and young people.”

Angel is a show that focuses just as much on young professional life as it does on the supernatural and it’s the familiar format of the procedural series interwoven with paranormal themes that makes it so interesting to watch. Characters like the titular character Angel, as well as Spike and Cordelia, also made the series loved by many, despite the fact that the Angel TV series also earned a few unpopular opinions from viewers.

The Bold Type (2017 – 2021)

The Bold Type is a must-watch if you’re a working and passionate woman!!!,” said Reddit user syedaayeshaimam. The series was often criticized for not being realistic, especially when it came to characters’ spending habits. But for those who grew up reading fashion and beauty magazines, seeing the inner workings of how they are made is a fun watch.

The show also focuses on workplace friendships and relationships, as well as work and life dilemmas. Perhaps most importantly, The Bold Type didn’t shy away from discussing important current topics while still remaining fun and engaging.

Suits (2011 – 2019)

“The last 2 seasons were horrible but the first 2 are great. How many times can a law firm pivot so much before going under? Lol.” said Reddit user ButterscotchAway3635 when suggesting suits as the show to watch.

This is a great choice, as it represents older and new generations of people working at a law firm, some of which are barely beginning their career path. This show also emphasizes workplace dramas and relationships, as well as betrayals, but this is what makes it interesting and one of the best legal dramas of all time.

Succession (2018 – )

Succession might fit your mind. It’s well-written, scripted, and aesthetically pleasing to watch,” Redditor pranj01 said. Succession focuses on betrayals and the lives of the unfathomably rich as much as it does on the life of young people in a professional setting.

It’s a very enjoyable show, but not necessarily relatable. Though young, the characters are nowhere near the beginning of their professional careers and already have more money than most people ever will.
