As audiences eagerly wait for these to come out, the movie industry has announced lots of other Broadway-inspired productions to reach the big screen. After the roaring achievements of Spielberg’s West Side Story in 2021, excitement is running high among cinephiles and music lovers alike.
After revolutionizing the small screen as Tyrion Lannister in the HBO production of Game of Thrones for eight seasons, Peter Dinklage took his acting career a step further with Cyrano.
Directed by Joe Wright, it is a romantic drama inspired by a 2018 stage musical adapted from Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac. It follows the story of Roxanne (played by Haley Bennett), an orphan trapped in a love triangle with her childhood friend Cyrano de Bergerac (portrayed by Dinklage), and a soldier named Christian de Neuvillette. It was released on February 25th and has been gathering critical appraisal ever since. Its nominations include two Golden Globes and one Oscar.
13 opened on Broadway in 2008 where it received one Drama Desk Award nomination and its Netflix adaptation is set to release on August 12th. Directed by Tamra Davis with a screenplay by Robert Horn, it tells the story of an Indiana teenager who moves to New York City.
The protagonist, Evan Goldman, will be portrayed by Eli Golden from Orange Is The New Black. 13 is already shaping up to become one of the movie musicals with the best songs, as three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown has already signed up to compose the soundtrack. He had also been responsible for the music and lyrics in the Broadway version.
Roald Dahl’s beloved character has already received a Broadway adaptation and the new movie version is set to be released at the beginning of December later this year.
Produced by the Roald Dahl Story Company and Netflix, it will focus on the girl with a vibrant imagination, who “dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results.” It counts with Emma Thompson in the role of Miss Agatha Trunchbull, and Alisha Weir as Matilda Wormwood.

On April 2021, Walt Disney Pictures announced plans to develop a film adaptation of the musical. Guys And Dolls
Based on two short stories, “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and “Blood Pressure”, by Damon Runyon, Guys and Dolls is a Broadway production from the 1950s.
It won the Tony Award for Best Musical and was first adapted to the big screen in 1955 with Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra, and Vivian Blaine as its protagonists. The most recent production will have Bill Condon, who co-wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-nominated 2017 hit The Greatest Showman.
West Side Story
Inspired by its 1957 stage adaptation namesake, West Side Story tells the well-known story of the forbidden love between Maria and Tony in the middle of the antagonism between two street gangs of distinct ethnic backgrounds.
Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, and the other cast members were joined by Rita Moreno, who played Anita in an earlier movie adaptation of the Broadway show. The new take on it was directed by none other than Steven Spielberg, receiving various nominations at the 94th Academy Awards and the 79th Golden Globe Awards. It is also widely considered to be a movie musical with the best costume design.
“Christmas Carol” is one of Charles Dickens’s most known tales. It focuses on a stingy businessman, Ebenezer Scrooge, who receives the visit of three Christmas spirits to teach him a moral lesson. It has been adapted in pretty much every form of media, including in Broadway productions.

Wicked is probably one of the most anticipated cinematic adaptations ever. The Broadway show centered on the relationship between two of the witches before Dorothy meets while she is in the land of Oz in L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wizard of Ozo.
Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West will be portrayed by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Ervio, respectively. It is being directed by Jon M.
